JIREH, MY PROVIDER
JIREH, MY PROVIDER.
Jehovah Jireh is a one of the Hebrew names of God, it means “my God will provide” or “the Lord is my Provider”.
I recently found myself thinking about how God is indeed our provider. God is more than enough for us because He knows exactly what we need and when we need it.
When packing for a trip, many of us do not even know what we need that is why we have the tendency to over pack. Even though I have never used a five-compartment container before, I will pack it for a two day trip because, I want to be prepared for any unplanned situation that could possibly arise. Would there be need for a five-compartment container during my short trip, definitely not; so why am I stressing over what I would or would not need.
In 1 Kings 17:2-6 New International Version, the Bible tells us of how God provided for Elijah, in the most unexpected way:- “Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.” So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.”
God commanded ravens to feed Elijah! That in itself is incredible. Have you ever wondered where the adjective ravenous came from? It’s from Raven. It means to have a very great appetite and be difficult to be satisfied. And those were the birds God commanded to feed Elijah. Ravens are scavenger birds, they feed on dead animal remains and it is not in their nature to supply a person with food, but God being God chose to provide for Elijah the way He wanted. Elijah trusted God, and God provided for him according to his needs – meat and bread in the morning and evening and water.
It is good to have plans and prepare for the future, but there is a thin line between planning and worrying. Do you make plans for the future worrying about everything and anything that may or may not happen? Or do you make plans knowing that God will provide for you. Constantly worrying about what we do not have or what we need will eat away at the present, because our minds are so focused on the next thing. If you worry too much, you start living in the future and forget about the present.
Often times I find myself guilty of this, I want to make plans towards something then I start worrying about what could go wrong and what may not work out. But then I have to remember that God is my Jehovah Jireh.
Matthew 6:25 – 27 New International Version says
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
If God can provide for the birds that do not plant or make any plans to plant, how much more us, His children? God will supply all our needs, but we have to trust him as our Jehovah Jireh.
The bible says in Philippians 4:19 New International Version,
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
Whenever we worry about our needs being met, let us please remember the lyrics of a song my aunty taught me. The song is “More Than Enough” by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, it goes simply like this:-
‘Jehovah Jireh, My Provider
You are more than enough for me’
