INVEST WISELY
INVEST WISELY
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the wise builders and we saw that there are indeed benefits to building wisely. Today let us take a look at wise investors.
Investment is a term normally used in financial circles but it’s use goes beyond financial matters alone.
A traditional definition for investment is that it is a commitment of resources to something that is expected to gain value over time.
For me the key words in this definition are:
Commitment
Resources
Gain Value
Time
How do we invest in the things that are of importance to us?
Let us look at the following examples of some things that are important that are worth investing in:
Family
Education
Work/Career/Business
Health
Relationships (including a relationship with God)
Above are five different groups of things that one can invest in (that is to. commit resources to) and not necessarily because of a future financial gain.
Families consist of husbamds and wives, parents, children, siblings and all other extended family memebers. How do we invest here? Do we commit resources like time, energy, finances to them? What kind of time do we invest in our aged parents, our spouses and our children? All these need quality time otherwise the future will be laden with regret of things not done at all or things done too late. I pray we will invest wisely here.
How about our education or the education of our children? How do we invest in that? Are we intentional about it or are we busy trying to compete and compare with others that we do not even realise that sometimes a child is not thriving in a particular environment? Or that a child is being bullied but we are just too busy to see? Let God teach us to invest wisely in the education of our children. The children are the future.
Let us look at how we invest in our work, careers and businesses. Is it a fulfilling experience or are we just punching the clock? Are we impacting anyone or is it the case that nobody will be sorry to see us go. Do we put in our best? If we have signed up for it, then we are there. Let us do it well. We can invest in self development. We can plough back resources into the business for expansion and growth. We must invest wisely here so that when opportunities come we can seize them.
How are we investing in our health? How and what are we committing to it? Do we make healthy food choices? Do we exercise or work out? How about a regular fasting habit (that works wonders) or regular fitness checks? These all need resources. Are we committing to spend some time walking in the mornings or evenings or are we going to go to the gym? Invest wisely.
Our relationships go beyond family members. We make friends from all the different phases of our lives; (some from as early as kindergarten) and technology has made it so easy to connect with long lost friends and acquaintances even when we are not all in the same place. But do we invest in these relationships? Some of us have archived groups we belong to or exited them on WhatsApp. Some of us never respond to anything. But its all good. Each to their own. We judge no one.
But there is the ultimate relationship that would profit us all if we were to invest in it.
That is our relationship with God.
Dear friends, this is the relationship that deserves every resource. The value we stand to gain at the end can never be bought by money, no matter how much.
This is the relationship that will help and guide us in all other relationships. This is the relationship that will teach us what to invest in and how to actually invest in them.
One might ask “How is a relationship with God expected to gain value over time?”
I will tell you how. The more committed you are to God and the more resources you spend in a relationship with HIm, you cannot but know Him more. And you can become a confidant to Him. “The LORD confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.” Psalm 25:14 NIV
God will tell us what we need to know and nothing will take us by surprise. And the peace that comes with that is everything.
INVEST WISELY AND BE AT PEACE.
