WHAT IS YOUR COVERING?

WHAT IS YOUR COVERING?

And David killed Goliath! Just like that.

“Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword.”  1 Samuel 17:49-50 NLT

Despite all Goliaths heavy covering and “protection” David killed him cheaply with a sling and a stone because God was with him and God helped him.

The bible gave us a lengthy and detailed description of Goliaths paraphernalia. “He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels.” 1 Samuel 17:5-7 NIV But when David, helped by God, came charging at the giant, the covering of bronze was not able to save him. And  Goliath fell like a pack of cards.

Dear friends, what is our protection? What or who do we rely on when we are faced with threats and challenges?

What is our own covering? Do we rely on people (Goliath had a shield bearer who was nowhere to be found when he fell) and physical things like Goliath? Or do we trust God to take over the battle, like David?

We must not allow the enemy to take us out cheaply by being afraid or doubtful. The Israelites were already cowering away in fear because they looked at and were intimidated by the physical appearance of Goliath, the nine foot giant. They did not consider the size and might of their God.

Today though, we are not faced with physical obstacles as such, yet we still struggle with all kinds of demonic plots. To overcome them we must get our covering from God as scripture tells us. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:11-17 NIV

It is God who is our shield. And we must have faith in Him. He is our exceeding great reward. He is our glory and the lifter of our head. These truths are worth our boast and our trust. David boasted in the LORD and trusted in Him completely. He did not doubt or imagine that the giant would not be killed. For David it was already a done deal. He was so certain and he spoke boldly about it too. (We must always speak boldly about our victory, because it is certain in Christ.) David must have had on the full armour of God; that is what covers and protects us. He spoke the truth of God’s word that said the battle is the LORD’s.

As we begin slowly counting down to the end of 2025, many of us will take stock. For some it will be a “Yipeee yaaaay! It has been a very good year.” For others, it might look like they achieved nothing much. And they might ask: “Where did I miss it? Where did I go wrong?”

I have come to tell us, if we feel that it has been a tough year, please in the few weeks left of 2025, let us take our eyes and our minds off the giants of delay, despair, doubt, fear and worry and let us look to the LORD. The battle is HIs; let Him fight it. Let us speak out our victory boldly. Goliath was still ranting when David said he would feed his carcass to the birds. Goliath did not scare him at all. What  boldness! What confidence in his God, the God of Israel!

“David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.” 1 Samuel 17: 45-46 NIV

LET US KEEP OURSELVES COVERED WITH THE SHIELD OF FAITH.

IT WILL QUENCH EVERY FIERY DART OF THE ENEMY. DO NOT BE DISTRACTED!
