SEEDTIME AND HARVEST
SEEDTIME AND HARVEST.
Early last month I mistakenly “locked myself out of my flat”. I was on my way home after a busy morning of deadlines and assignments and upon returning home, I could not find my keys and I was shocked, because I always make sure to take my keys when going out. On this day, the staff in the building were on leave, meaning that I would have had to call an external company to regain entry. I was already stressing out about making this call and going through the process, and about three minutes into my waiting outside, an ad-hoc staff exited the building. I informed her of everything and she let me in the building with her keys and stayed to make sure I found my keys. I found my keys eventually, as they had been in my pocket the whole time.
Later that day I found myself reflecting on what happened and how everything had worked out that day, if I had gotten home a minute later than I did that day, I would have missed the staff who helped me get in, and would have had to call the external company to get a replacement. I was grateful to God and glad I received favour that day. In all my reflection and thinking I remembered a very important law in the bible which is in Genesis 8:22 (New International Version):-
“As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease.”
This bible verse is apt in describing the earth, because as long as we live on earth, we are guided by the laws of this earth, one of which is seedtime and harvest. The verse encapsulates other principles like changes in times and season, but I want to focus on seedtime and harvest, which can also be referred to as sowing and reaping. The picture that usually comes to mind is a farmer sowing seeds and reaping crops during harvest, but this law is not limited to agriculture, it also applies to our actions. Today I want to emphasise on sowing seeds of good deeds. I am by no means a perfect person, but I always try to offer a helping hand whenever I can, and I can confidently say that I have also received help, even with the most mundane things, an example is the story I referenced above.
Doing good deeds should be a part of our lives by virtue of being a Christian. I know it may seem hard, especially in our fast-paced world where people take advantage of kindness, but even the Bible tells us “to do good to all people”.
The Bible says in Galatians 6:10 (New International Version) – “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
I also want to emphasise that good deeds do not have to be financial, nor do they have to be grand gestures or elaborate showcases. Simply do what you can do with what God has given you, and if you are able to give a lot, give a lot, and if you are able to give a little, give that little. God will be pleased with us when we do, Hebrews 13:16 New International Version states: “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
The law of seedtime and harvest is equally applicable to other areas of life apart from good deeds. We should therefore be reminded that wbatever seed we are sowing, whether good or bad, positive or negative, we will surely reap its fruit.
This law also applies to our physical and spiritual life, if you sow good habits in your life, you will reap productive outcomes, if you sow seeds to please your spirit, you will reap eternal life. The bible says in Galatians 6:8-9 (New International Version):-
“8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
The end of a year always calls for reflection and resolutions for most of us. I want to encourage you today, for whatever you sowed or did not sow this year, 2025 can be better by sowing good seeds. At the start of this year I am sure majority of us had bright ideas and big dreams, this is amazing, but in reality, how many did we follow through? Let us challenge ourselves to be and do better next year, do good to all people, I encourage us as in Galatians 6:9 (NIV), let us not become weary in doing good.
Happy New Year! I wish us all a 2025 filled with blessings.
