A PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE
We often hear the saying “everything happens for a reason.” Some of us believe it and some don’t. I usually believe it with conditions. For example when something does not go in accordance with a plan I may have had in my mind, I then go on to console myself with, “everything happens for a reason”. On another hand we should know that God has a plan for us.
Leaving that aside, how about a focus on the plans of God, the creator of heaven and earth, who knows the beginning and the end. God has plans for us, every one of us. Take a look at the life of the prophet Jeremiah for instance. Jeremiah was a prophet of God, He (God) sent him to tell the people of Jerusalem about their impending destruction. Jeremiah was told by God that his message will not be accepted well and he will be greatly hated.
As Jeremiah went on about what God had told him, He (God) made the prophet know two very important things. The first one, before Jeremiah’s mission to the people of Jerusalem, in Jeremiah 1:4-5 NIV,
“⁴The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
⁵Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
From these bible verses we can see that God lets Jeremiah know that before he was conceived in his mother’s womb, God knew him, he knew who he was going to be and what he was going to do.
And secondly in Jeremiah’s letter to the people of Jerusalem, he lets them know Gods plan in Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
¹”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.
The above verse is also about the plans of God, God has plans to prosper and not to harm, plans to give a hope and a future. Plans that show purpose.
Let us apply these messages of God (through Jeremiah) to our personal lives. The plans God has for us are plans that point us to live a purpose driven life. Before we came into this world God knew every single thing about us. He already knew what we would be, he created us for a reason and with a purpose. As Christians we should live a life of purpose and always know that God has a plan for us.
How then can we find this purpose that God has for us? We can do this by talking to God in prayers and asking him to lead us through life to find our reason for existing. Also we need to give God full control of our life, give him our all and let him lead us and show us the way. Let us get up in the morning enthusiastic about starting our day, then we can set goals we want to achieve and though it may not happen all of a sudden, as we achieve our daily goals we are gradually living a life of purpose.
We should also remember, that when life seems to be heading in a blurry direction, God has plans that will give us a hope and a future, not just a future, but a future filled with hope. Do not be afraid of anything that may want to hinder you, in Jeremiah 1:8 God tells Jeremiah “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.” So we should not be afraid of the future. Although times may seem hard and the future seems blurry, God has promised us a hope and a future just as he did Jeremiah. It is important for us to follow the direction of God because our purpose may not be the same as our neighbour’s. Follow God and he will show you the way.
